What is a Personal Care Attendent (PCA)/Personal Support Specialist (PSS)?
Personal Support Specialists and Personal Care Attendants are trained to respond to the specialized needs of clients. A PCA/PSS assists clients with the activities of daily living. Some of these functions we may take for granted, however, other members of our community need a 'Helping Hand' to maintain an acceptable home environment.
A PCA/PSS can help clients tremendously with some of the following everyday tasks:
- Getting in and out of bed, a wheelchair or vehicle...
- Meal planning, preparation and feeding...
- Assistance with various household tasks...
- Escorted transportation to medical appointments, grocery shopping, banking, etc.
- Assist with personal care, such as bathing and personal hygene
Many people advertise privately to do PCA/PSS work, but HELPING HANDS employees have attended a training course approved by the State of Maine Department of Education and are Certified as a PCA/PSS or have obtained equivalent or greater training. HELPING HANDS makes sure that the PCA/PSS has these skills and the competency to best perform the tasks necessary to assist those clients in need. A qualified Agency also eliminates the concerns of Payroll, Workers Compensation Insurance, Liability Insurance, Fidelity Bonds and IRS paperwork requirements.
